Hello Mr Stewart There are a number of ways that you can use the response system in a live class, the simplest being: Hand out the student remote units to the class, and within a couple of presses on your teacher handset you can be asking every member of your class to respond to any question you may wish to ask- the students can respond in a variety of ways ( dependant on the question you've asked) their response can be: a simple yes/no, multiple choice, true or false, numeric, multiple mark, sequence, or standard texted response( texting is done in he same way as on mobile phone)..the nice thing about the text and some of the other response modes is that there doesn’t have to be a right or a wrong answer, it can be different opinions that students can be expressing, and these can be used for debate within the class--- In addition to asking spontaneous questions , you can also ask pre-prepared questions in applications like PowerPoint and other applications that you may well be currently using---- and at the end of each session all the responses are recorded, and data can be very easily read at a glance identifying areas that need a little more work or areas of strength... I have found it very easy to use--- Classroom response systems do a lot more than what I've written in a few short sentences above and what I found very useful was the training disc that the set came with.
What I found really useful about the Classcom and the census software was the simplicity of using my existing PowerPoint presentations and using them interactively with my groups- With the Classcom software , once it was put on my machine, it simply placed additional drop down boxes in my PPT presentations, and for any PPT slide I want to make interactive all I did was click on these drop down boxes and selected the type of response I expected my group to make- And where my slides were just giving information, I simply left those slides as information slides, so the class only responded to the slides that I nominated as question or response slides. What this meant was that the PowerPoint presentations that I used previously are the same that I use now, except now I use them interactively with the class-- The Census software I find in some ways even more useful as it allows me to use all other resources as well as PowerPoint resources and use them interactively within my groups, and I also have the ability to pre- map these resources in a similar way that I do within my Classcom software. The key difference I found between the two software’s is that the Census software allows me to ask open questions very easily with very little setup and the Classcom software got the fun gaming which is very (at times too) popular with my groups- I’ve only had the equipment for a short while and I have found it to be quite intuitive, and the training disc that came with the software I found really helpful.
I think the text and drop function on class comm is a really useful function. I would like to hear how some primary teachers have used it in literacy. I've used it a lot with artefacts on the visualiser. I have found it brilliant in numeracy, especially reminding the children about the use of tools such as the protractor and the ruler.
